You've got mail! Receive Mail/Parcel Notifications Instantly

Desired Outcome:

You receive immediate notifications on your mobile when a mail or parcel is delivered to your mailbox or parcel box.

How to get it done:

  1. Select and Download the CONTROLLER: We use the Tuya Smart App for this example. Or you can choose your own controller from here (ensure it is capable of achieving the desired automation).

    • Download the Tuya Smart app.

  1. Select the SENSOR:

    • Type: Motion sensor.
    • We recommend Zigbee motion sensor for better connectivity and battery durability. However compatible WiFi sensor can still work.
    • For Zigbee motion sensor, you need to have Zigbee Bridge (hub/gateway) or buy it separately.
    • In this example we will use Tuya Motion Sensor that is compatible with Tuya Controller.
    • You can browse different types of motion sensors from here.
    • Mount the sensor inside your mailbox or parcel box, ensuring it is positioned to detect when mail or parcels are delivered.
  2. Automate using the controller app:

    • Open the controller app.
    • Add the Zigbee Bridge first (if applicable): Ensure the Zigbee bridge power is on and in pairing mode.
    • Click "Add Device" and you should be able to add the Zigbee bridge.
    • Make sure the motion sensor is in pairing mode and follow the same steps to add the sensor.
    • Create a scene where the trigger device is the motion sensor and the action is to send a notification.
      • Click on "When device status changes."
      • Select the motion sensor.
      • Set the trigger as detecting motion.
      • Set the action to send a notification.

Expected Time and Cost:

  • Time: 5 minutes
  • Cost: ~$20 (or ~$60 if you require a Zigbee bridge)

DIY Difficulty Level:

  • Easy

Important Notes:

  • If you choose Zigbee sensors/devices, ensure you have a Zigbee bridge. Purchase one separately if needed.
  • For Z-Wave sensors/devices, ensure you have a Z-Wave hub/controller.
  • For Matter/Thread devices, ensure compatibility with your existing setup and controller.
  • Ensure the Zigbee sensor/device is close to other connected Zigbee devices to maintain reliable connectivity, as they work in a mesh network.
  • Ensure your Wi-Fi network reaches the mailbox or parcel box for reliable connectivity.
  • Regularly check the sensor to ensure it is functioning correctly and replace batteries as needed.
