Automatically Light Up Your Backyard When Alfresco Doors Open – Perfect for Kids!

Desired Outcome: Your backyard lights automatically turn on when the alfresco doors are opened and turn off after 1 hour, providing a safe and well-lit environment for your kids to play.

How to get it done:

  1. Select and Download the CONTROLLER: We use the Tuya Smart App for this example. Or you can choose your own controller from here (ensure it is capable of achieving the desired automation).

    • Download the Tuya Smart app.
  2. Select the SENSOR:

    • Type: Door/window sensor.
    • We use the Tuya Zigbee Sensor in this example. Note: Any Zigbee device will require a Zigbee bridge to work. Make sure to purchase it separately or use your existing one.
    • You can browse different types of door/window sensors from here.
    • Mount one part of the sensor on the fixed frame of the alfresco door and the other part on the door itself. Ensure they are positioned very close to each other.
  3. Select the DEVICE:

    • Type: Smart outdoor lights.
    • Select smart outdoor lights from here (click here to browse different types of smart lights).
    • Ensure the lights are compatible with your controller app.
  4. Automate using the controller app:

    • Open the controller app.
    • Add the Zigbee Bridge first (if applicable): Ensure the Zigbee bridge is in pairing mode.
    • Click "Add Device" and you should be able to add the Zigbee bridge.
    • Ensure the sensor is in pairing mode and follow the same steps to add the sensor.
    • Add the smart lights: Ensure they are in pairing mode.
    • Create a scene or automation to turn on the backyard lights when the alfresco doors open.
      • Click on "Create Scene."
      • Select the door/window sensor as the trigger device.
      • Set the trigger as detecting the door opening.
      • Choose the action to turn on the backyard lights.
    • Create another scene or automation to turn off the lights after 1 hour.
      • Click on "Create Scene."
      • Select the smart lights as the trigger device.
      • Set the trigger to turn off the lights 1 hour after they are turned on.
      • Save and test your automation.

Expected Time and Cost:

  • Time: 10 minutes
  • Cost: ~$40

DIY Difficulty Level:

  • Easy

Important Notes:

  • Make sure the smart lights you select are rated for outdoor use.
  • If you choose Zigbee sensors/devices, ensure you have a Zigbee bridge. Purchase one separately if needed.
  • For Z-Wave sensors/devices, ensure you have a Z-Wave hub/controller.
  • For Matter/Thread devices, ensure compatibility with your existing setup and controller.
  • Ensure your Wi-Fi network reaches the alfresco area for reliable connectivity. Same for Zigbee, make sure there is a Zigbee devices near to the Zigbee sensors/devices
  • Test the sensor placement before finalizing the installation to ensure it detects the door opening properly.
