Simulate Occupancy While You’re Away

Simulate Occupancy While You’re Away

Desired Outcome

Your lights and blinds turn on and off at certain times as if someone is home to ward off any intruders and also increase the security of your home.

How to get it done

1. Select and Download the Controller

  • The controller app must work well with smart switches and automated blinds to control everything at home.
  • In this example, we will use the Tuya Smart App; however, any other application, such as Google Home, Amazon Alexa, or Apple Home, can also be used.
  • Tuya Smart application can be easily found and installed on the application store of your device.

2. Select the Devices

  • Smart Switches: Select a smart switch that works with your lights and controller application.
  • Automated Blinds or Curtain Motors: Choose motorised blinds or curtain controllers which can be integrated with your app or a Zigbee Hub. The blinds should be easy to fit and should be able to integrate to the smart home system.

3. Install and Set Up the Devices

  • Smart Switches: For easier configuration, throw your old wall switches and replace them with smart switches, else, plug into smart plugs.
  • Blind Motors: Use them together with your app or hub.
  • Zigbee Hub: Zigbee hub should be switched on, make sure that it is in pairing mode and connect it to the controller application.

4.  Automate the Setup Using the Controller App:

  • Add the devices:
    • Open the Tuya App.
    • First, add the Zigbee hub first, if used, by following the pairing steps presented in the application.
    • Pair the smart switches and automated blinds with it and add them in the app when it is in the pairing mode.
    • Make certain all devices are correctly identified, and are not just called “Device 1”, “Device 2” etc.
  • Create Scenes for Simulated Occupancy:
    • The smart or automation section can be found in the home screen of the app.
    • Do so by hitting the “+” to add a new scene.
    • For Lights: Set the trigger to a specific time or random time intervals (e.g., lights turn on at 7:00 PM and off at 10:00 PM). Be selective with the smart switches managing your lights.
    • For Blinds: Set the blinds to open during the day (e.g., They are opened during the morning (for instance at 8:00 AM) and closed in the evening (for instance at 6:00 PM). Try to add some diversity into the timetable in order to replicate more realistic actions.
  • Test the Automation:
    • Execute scenes to control whether the lights and blinds work during the intended time.
    • You can make any necessary changes on the timings to enhance security.

Expected Time and Cost

Time: 20 - 30 minutes

Cost: Starts at ~$32 depending on number of smart switches, blinds and hub.

Important Notes

  1. If using devices, which operate on Zigbee or Z-Wave protocols, make sure you have a good hub or bridge on board.
  2. Check Wi-Fi or Zigbee signal level in all installed devices locations to ensure continuous working of the devices.
  3. Select irregular schedules to minimise cycle regularities of your work.
  4. If you need added security then consider using smart cameras or other sensors.
  5. Make sure you use authorised electrician to install the Smart Switches
